The “Sundown UltraMarathon,” the 100 kilometer version of the “Sundow Marathon,” in which participants run through the Singaporean night, will be held on September 14th 2013.
The race will be the same from its sister running event “Sundown Marathon,” a night run event already well known in Singapore which was held on May this year. The event was started in 2008 in Singapore and is the only night ultra marathon. The first time the event was held, the running distance was 84 km, which is twice the distance of a full marathon and 192 men and 24 women managed to complete the course. The running distance was increased to 100 km in 2011.
About 3000 people in total are expected to participate this year in the race, which will take place in Marina Barrage. Adrian Mok, from HiVelocity Events (the company in charge of the race,) stated that “We have introduced a new ‘Team Category’ to reach out to more participants and to deepen the bond between them.” Besides the 100 km main race, this year there will be a “Team Category” for teams of 2 (in which each person will run 50 km) and of 4 (in which each person will run 25 km.) (Anybody who will be 18 years old or older on December 31st 2013 can participate.)
On the day of the race, all participants regardless of their category will start running at the same time: 18:00 PM. The cut-off time is set for 18 hours for those running the full 100 km, 9 hours for pairs, and 4.5 hours for teams of 4 people.
The actual detailed course for the race has not been released to the public yet, but it has been announced that there will be stations with drinks and food supplies at East Coast Park (about 12.5 km into the race) and Changi Ferry Road (about 25 km into the race) in order to provide the necessary energy to run the whole distance.
The first men and women from each category (in the team category this will be divided in men, women and mixed) will receive a cash reward and luxurious prizes.
Entries for this event, different from other running events in the fact that it is held at night and it is a long distance 100 km course, are currently being accepted. This is for sure one of the most prominent events among runners in Singapore. As Mr. Mok puts it “The symbols of the Ultramarathon are decisiveness, passion and endurance. Together with the Sundown Marathon, this is a nigh run that all running lovers look forward to in Singapore.”
You can take on the challenge of running 100 km by yourself, or you can also aim to complete the full distance by building a team and sharing the effort with your peers! Whichever you choose, this is a once every two year opportunity to challenge yourself!
