Every drop of water in the first 100 meters below the ocean surface contains thousands of free-floating, microscopic flora called phytoplankton. Inhabiting 3 quarters of the earth’s surface, these single-celled organisms fuel nearly the whole marine ecosystem and form the most basic food source of the aquatic food web from zooplankton to whales.

Accounting for half of all photosynthetic activity on earth, these microscopic flora, for about 500 million years, has used the sun’s energy to split water molecules to oxygen and hydrogen.
