Grapefruit, having a diameter of up to 18cm, is recognized as the largest type of citrus fruit. It got its name from the way it grows on its tree, resembling clusters of grape. Just like other citrus fruits, the grapefruit is an excellent source of Vitamin C and fiber.

Usually, the color of the fruit’s exterior skin ranges from white, yellow, pink, and a deep ruby red. Grapefruits may come in two varieties: seedless and seeded. They are eaten like an orange, segmented onto wedges to produce a flavorful piece.

Because they are available throughout the year, there is an abundant supply of the fruit. The best time to eat them, however, is during spring and winter; when this fruit becomes sweeter and juicier.

Benefits of Eating Grapefruits

1. Smoother and firmer skin

Mixed with a teaspoon of sugar, grapefruit can be used as a mild exfoliant for the skin. This will help smoothen out rough skin. Because it contains a lot of vitamin C, grapefruit helps reduce the excessive production of skin pigmentation that leads to the onset of age spots. Vitamin C in grapefruit is also responsible for producing a protein called collagen, which helps keep the skin smooth and firm.

The prepared grapefruit exfoliant should not be used on the face as it may irritate sensitive skin.

2. Protects your heart and control diabetes

Experts believe that by eating a grapefruit a day, it can lower triglycerides by 27% and bad LDL cholesterol levels by 15.5%. Because it contains pectin and lycopene, grapefruit is able to help prevent the onset of heart problems like stroke and heart disease.

Grapefruit is also known to stabilize the body’s blood sugar and insulin levels. Choosing the deep red variety is a good suggestion, as these tend to contain a higher amount of antioxidants.

Before consuming grapefruit, it is best to check with a physician as it may increase potency on some prescription drugs.

3. Prevention against some cancers

Studies have shown that the daily intake of grapefruit juice may reduce cancer-causing enzymes. As a result, it is able to help protect against the development of lung and colon cancer.

4. Metabolism booster

Grapefruit is best known for its fat burning compound. As a result, many use it to help them lose weight. Before each meal, eat half of a grapefruit to help boost metabolism.

5. Medicinal use

The flowers from the grapefruit tree produce an essence which, when prepared, is able to treat stomachaches and insomnia. Urinary disorders can also be controlled with the use of the fruit’s pulp. Lastly, its leaves have been known to produce an antibiotic activity.

6. Cleaning the house

Excess grapefruit juice can also help with cleaning dirt. By mixing grapefruit juice with sea salt, it can help get rid of dirt and grime typically found in bathroom and floor tiles.

Eating Grapefruit

The typical way of eating grapefruit is either eating it raw or juicing it. However, there are a number of ways grapefruit can be used and served alongside meals. When mixed with cilantro and chili peppers, grapefruit can already be served as a salsa dip perfect for eating chips. Another idea is to mix slices of grapefruit on a bed of salad to create a colorful, nutritious, and delicious medley.
